    Very cool solution to model actual lenses. But I got to be honest this kind of thing niggles me. I dont think its a problem that needed to be solved. Engineers went to great efforts to produce technologies like unreal engine that are free of things like lens aberrations, only for you to put it all back. They are undesirable and were always thought of as undesirable. I prefer the "perfect" images not arty imagery with distracting aberrations. This is the same things as when photographers shoot on a digital camera that engineers shortened their lives to make capture the image in the most perfect way free of film artifacts, only for someone to click a filter in post and put it all back. Have some respect for the progress made. The "perfect" imagery looked better than the lensed version, and its what the folks who used real cameras would have liked to have achieved if they could have. Capture perfectly the imperfections in real things rather than adding your own that dont need to be there, and remember the struggles that came before.

    I remember when film people talked like this about digital. They were wrong. Digital wasn’t boring or ugly; they were nostalgic. The goal of the camera was to provide to your eyeballs something real, not something messed up

    bought them and they look amazing! Although I'm using an HDRIBackdrop and for some reason it makes it seem as if that object is disabled when the lens is active. If I hide the lens or all 3 glasses in the details pane, then the sky comes back along with my skylight. Really weird behavior. Wondering if you know why this is happening? as it's probably something to do with the post process fx or materials or something when using the lenses. My 1st thought was translucency, but didn't see anything that affected anything

      threw in an emissive double sided sphere as a replacement for the hdri backdrop for now and seems to have more or less the same effect as my skybox for this specific dark scene, but would like to know if there is a solution to this.

    So you take a perfect image and f it up? I'm guessing you're in the 24 fps only camp as well. I'll never understand that mentality. Clearer is better. Making shots and scenes in Unreal Engine 5 is just so fun and creative. It's probably the best film making tool invented since the film camera was invented. Why I say that is it allows you to build and design worlds and animation but also to film your world at photoreal detail. Then you can change the scene, lighting, camera or actor placement in realtime ! which is totally amazing.

    This is kind of neat. But you are just showing this with diffuse materials. Since you did say you added an "actual lens", I am guessing you added a 3D modeled lens with a translucent material. I have been using Unreal 4 for a while to make renders and shaders, and one thing it kind of struggles with is translucent materials through translucent materials. They either don't render at all (depending on your settings), or end up being very noisy which means they increase render times exponentially the more you stack together. It also struggles with reflections of said translucent materials in smooth surfaces. I don't know if they fixed it in Unreal 5, since I haven't tried it yet. But it would be a thing to consider when using this method. I think the best option would be to add these effects INSIDE the render code (maybe a cinema camera plugin) rather than using a physical object. Since a lot of these effects could be effectively faked with screen space filters. And would result in faster and cleaner (I mean free from path tracing noise) renders with less problems.

    • @JoshuaMKerr
      @JoshuaMKerr 2 дні тому

      I agree about adding this in render code, but not something I'll be looking at just yet. I will need to work with someone who knows how to code for a start :P Unreal's pathtracer doesn't have any issues around translucency, lumen on the other hand does.

    I love this. It may not be efficient for workflow, but it takes the finickyness and mysticism out of how to get from point a to point b When you're searching for a look and you don't know how to get there, and you don't have real life vintage camera's and lenses to use for reference. You also get an incredible result in a way that moves several layers of abstraction. This is such a great tool, even if it's just used for learning, or a keyframe diagnostic/reference when you send renders down the pipeline.

    The first question is pretty ignorant of what unreal actually has to offer. Blender simply cant do what unreal does with a nearly 1 to 1 switch from lumen to path tracer. Obviously there are going to be some differences (need to boost global GI slightly for instance) but you simply CAN'T lookdev in Eevee and then switch over to cycles without a dramatic change in your scene. Path tracer just brings unreals offline render to parity with any other DCC and the real time lookdev just makes me want to use it as a default.

    Cool and good work I guess. But I have to wonder when camera's will start using algorithms to undo these types of distortions so we can take pictures of reality. There's definitely an element of 'snootiness' when people get too invested in how 'bad' something looks as being a feature. That's true the other way too with people wanting 16K 240fps content on their living room TV. Will we see a future where a TV remote has a button to turn on/off lens artifacting?

    This is super niche, but you should check out NVIDIA's Caustics Branch of UE5.2. That branch was made to test out simulating physically based realtime glass/water caustics and the associated refraction/dispersion that come along with that. It has a specific feature for RayTraced Depth-of-Field that looks insanely better than the native DoF. It's not perfect, and the entire NVRTX branch doesnt seem to be a high priority for NVIDIA right now, but if you look at some of the examples on UA-cam you'll see why it's worth jumping through so many hoops. I've downloaded your free lens and I'm going to attempt to migrate it to a 5.2 project and see how well it works. I've experimented with placing raw glass lens shapes in front of the camera in previous NVRTX Caustics projects with some really cool results, so I've been dying to try a more sophisticated setup like this.
